Latina Experience
Freedom
Introduction Text by Erasma Beras
March, 2006
As Americans, more specifically, as Latino-Americans, the idea of freedom takes on greater significance. As Americans, we are born free; free to practice a religion of our choice, to choose a profession, to freely voice our opinion in protest or in support of an idea. However, as Latin-Americans, we are obliged to recognize that these freedoms are not yet universal, as millions of people, worldwide, continue to live under the restrictive rule of authoritarian governments, including many countries in Latin America. As Latin-Americans it is our responsibility to stay informed, to question government actions, but most importantly to support our people's quest for equality.
In the following pages, you will read the stories of courageous people that have made the ultimate sacrifice for themselves, their families and for their country.
